Christmas knitting and a sock meme

First of all, I would like to celebrate the purchase of a new teapot. Hooray! It's not overly heavy or tacky, it's just right. It holds about 4 cups which is perfect since Mutti and I each drink two cups of tea in the am. We bought it at Gretchen's in Mt. Vernon. If you live in the area or are travelling there I highly recommend stopping in to check out the kitchenware. Very nice shop.

It's that time of year again! I started Xmas knitting a little later than usual, but since I'm only working on Xmas gifts I think I'll make it. Here's the list so far:

-Pink Pomatomus (see above) for Mutti: I'm ready to start the heel flap on the first sock. These are going pretty quickly.

-Handyed handspun feather and fan socks for Di: I'm turning the heel. I have to figure out the gusset because I'm not doing the same old-same old k2tog, knit across instep, ssk deal.

-Scarf for Charles: This was garter stitch, but I got really sick of it so it's been ripped out and I'm knitting a k2, p2 rib all the way. I have about 6".

-Cabled headband for Di: To match a pair of cabled mittens I knit her a few years ago. Apparently a cabled hat wasn't enough. I have a headband cast on, but I don't think I like the pattern I'm trying. I'm going to make another one up.

-Socks for Kris and Josh: Every year our friends Kris and Josh get a pair of socks. Last year it was plain This year it's going to be Retro Rib. Kris socks will be knit with pink Dream In Color, Josh's: green Silja.

-Aunt Marge: Cabled mittens and a knitted heart (she just had an angiogram).

I haven't decided what to knit for Cindy. I'm racking my brain. There's another person on my list, but I can't post their gift because they read my blog.

I'm also doing some Christmas spinning. I'm finishing the angora for my sister and I'm spinning some jade corriedale for someone else.

I finally got the alpaca fleece from Canada! Woo! I only have two more "batches" to wash and then I'll post a little more about it. It's very dirty. I ordered a set of Ashford fine tooth handcarders from Knot Just Yarn. Can't wait to start carding. I'm thinking about carding it together with 2 lbs. of llama fiber so I have enough for a sweater. Thoughts?

Sock Meme!

Since I'm knitting so many socks for Christmas I thought I'd post a sock meme.

1. What's your favorite sock yarn? (please note that the word 'yarn' is singular. Just pick one. I know it's hard.)

BMFA Socks That Rock. Sometimes I don't like how the colors pool, but the yarn is lovely to knit with and really durable.

2. What's your favorite type and brand of sock needle?

Crystal Palace bamboo 6" dpns. No matter how much I extoll the greatness of two circs I always go back to dpns. I can't help myself.

3. Do you knit your socks toe up, cuff down, or sideways?

Usually cuff down, but I just started a pair toe up. Sideways is in the future.

4. Do you knit both socks at once or just one at a time?

One at a time. Getting over SSS builds character and increases stamina. Like viagra.

5. What's your favorite toe and why?

Short row. It's fun to knit and can be used as a heel and a toe.

6. Favorite heel?

Short row.

7. Do you prefer plain or patterned socks?

It depends on the yarn. Plain socks for handpaints, patterned socks for solids.

8. Who do you knit the most socks for?

9. Do you darn your socks? If not, what do you do with them?

I darn them, of course.

10. Do you only wear handknit socks?

Yes. Pamper thy feet.

Bonus question: What pattern, if any, is your basic "I-just-need-a-pair-of-socks" sock pattern based on? Do you keep it written down or memorized?

It used to be Ann Norling's Wide Wale socks pattern, but it's evolved from there. I keep it memorized.

I'm tagging Allison and Cristi. Don't wiggle your way out of this one!

Okay, I promise to do this next time! :)

Your Christmas knitting makes me wistful for the days when I would bust out loads of knitted gifts. Not this year. Good thing we have baby photo related stuff to pass out this time!

That's a huge Christmas knitting list! I'm impressed.

I love those pomatomus socks. There's a variegated pair on flickr somewhere that look like watermelon slices. Just beautiful. (As are yours of course).

I've been spending the day browsing the free knitting pattern ring and came across a pattern for a 4 cup brown betty tea cozy. I drink alot of tea but my husband and I keep a thermal carafe full of hot water and make a cup at a time. I always thought the tea cozies were silly and just get wet when you pour the tea. Anyway when I saw this pattern today - I may reconsider. blah, blah, blah... Now I see you proudly displaying your tea pot and I had to share the pattern. So here is the link
